What does baby really need?

This is for all the moms out there. I need advice. What do I really need to get for our little one for the first few months? What are the must haves and then what are the nice to have but no necessities? I am just getting lost in all of the pop-psychology must-haves and what our baby really needs. So moms, please post some ideas of items I need to get or put on our baby registry... Your experience will greatly help me out! Thanks so much!

  1. My must-haves for my newborns were a binky, swaddling blankets, and lanolin (okay, that's for you not the baby, but it's a must have if you are going to nurse). Obviously you need all the other stuff like diapers, clothes, soaps, lotions, etc. But you don't need to buy anything fancy until your baby comes and you can know what they really need. If your baby likes to rock, buy a swing so your arms can have a rest once in awhile. But not all babies like swings. Etc.

When my kids were newborns they didn't like to sleep flat on their back. But instead of buying the things that you lay your baby in that makes them feel snug, I rolled up a blanket to lean their backs on so they were a little more on their side. It made them feel like they were still being held, and we didn't pay $20 for it.

Really, your baby just needs YOU when they are born. As you realize the things they need, that's when you send your husband to Walmart. :)

  2. All we had to begin with was a bassinet and a changing table. We found a changing table that converted to a dresser, so we are still able to use it even though Sam has outgrown the actual changing table part. I would also have on hand a breast pump, bottle, and a can of baby formula (I have plenty if you would like one so you don't have to go buy some) just in case, even if you do plan on breastfeeding. We had to make a 3am run to Powell from Lovell to get it, so I would say be prepared.

  3. Ok, I am the queen of this. I hate how hyped up everything is!

-Diapers, wipes, rash cream, baby wash and lotion.
    -Bulb syringe
-Clothes(Onsies, rompers, and a couple cute outfits)
    -Baby blankets
-A place for baby to sleep
    -Car seat

    For baby, that's honestly it.

For you... (I'll assume you're nursing for this because I have no idea really for bottle feeding)

-Nursing pads(pay the extra for the Lansinoh brand!)
    -Ice packs

That's what I consider the bare necessity list. There are a lot of other things that really help though.

-Baby swing! (If your baby gets colicky this becomes a MUST)
-Breast pump and a bottle or two.
    -paper plates, bowls and cups.
    -Food made ahead and frozen
-Stroller(one with a carseat is very handy)
    -Floor activity mat
    -Extra pillows(firm ones)
-A baby positioner(not sure exactly what they are called, but they are really nice if you co-sleep too.)
-Rocking chair of some kind(Our computer chair worked for me)

Ok, that's just what I can think of off the top of my mind but I'm sure I've forgotten something. I always try not to give unsolicited advice/information, but if you have any questions, I love answering them! My mind is pretty focused on remembering all this since I'll be doing it again in about three months!

  4. Other than the basics, these were the things that I really found useful:

    A simple breast pump
A good "baby's first year" book--not a scrapbook, but a developmental and "medical" manual. It was a lifesaver at 3 am the first time mine had a fever and I wasn't sure what was going on.
    A sling or baby carrier

The rest you can get as you need, and can even borrow from friends for a test-drive. I'm so excited for you Brooke.

  5. Well everyone summed it up pretty well so I will just list the things that I think you DON'T have to have.

    A baby monitor
    bottle warmer
    bottle rack
    wipe warmer
    bouncy chair

Oh and by the way if your looking for a cheaper diaper than the pampers, huggies or luvs, try the Target "Up and Up" brand. They are usually $6.00 per pack but sometimes you can get them for $5.00 on sale. (That's almost half of what the other diapers cost and they work awesome, I haven't had any leaks). Oh and if your planning on breastfeeding but need a bottle or two for emergencies, buy the "Dr. Brown" brand bottle. This bottle has won the most awards for being most like breastfeeding and it will save you a lot of money to buy it first rather than trying ten other bottles out on your baby.

  6. babies don't need much, but i would say put anything and everything you want on your baby register. then you can get some cool stuff from others and you can pick up the few things the baby REALLY needs if you don't get them. i have gotten ALOT of stuff from second hand kids stores and then on craigslist. i would borrow stuff from friends/family too before you buy stuff, like a swing because your babe my not even like it. how are you feeling?? are you on facebook?? where are some prego pictures?? if you want to know what i really think you need email me it's even longer than this post!! staceyhansen2003@hotmail.com
